There is no resource more invaluable to a runner than a podcast about running.

They’re free, give expert advice, and make those long (potentially grueling) runs go by super quickly.

Trust me, I get it.

While you may love running, sometimes it can get dull on the trails when you’re out there for hours. Especially if the training conditions are sub par.

Running to a new podcast episode can give you that boost.

Listening to podcasts while running has, for me personally, changed the way I view my runs entirely.

By forming a running ritual of listening to one podcast episode per run, it sets a passive timer so I don’t have to constantly be checking my time.

The best part?

It really makes it feel like ME TIME.

So often I find myself during a run overthinking my checklist for the day, brainstorming what groceries I need, or ruminating about that one thing I said that that one person (whose name I can’t remember) a year ago.

Listening to podcasts has helped me focus on one thing during my runs, which optimizes the time I get to myself.

The amount I take away from one run, or one episode, makes it feel like I just had a free, one-on-one coaching session with an expert — or a running therapist at least.

Also, there’s nothing to further add to my love for running than by listening to motivating podcasts ABOUT running!

While there are a huge amount of podcasts for runners, these are my top recommendations to get you through your daily miles.

I’m confident that this list of podcasts will keep you occupied during your runs for a long time!

The Top 21 Podcasts For Runners

For reference here’s a list of the podcasts we’ll cover here:

    So let’s get into it!

    1) Marathon Training Academy

This will forever be one of my favorite running podcasts of all time.

It was one of the first I stumbled upon when I started running in 2013 and I haven’t stopped listening since.

The podcast is co-hosted by runners Angie and Trevor who are the most relatable, adorable running couple there is.

Angie Spencer is a professional badass who has run 50+ marathons (what?!) and uses her past experiences to connect with and inspire other runners striving to hit their running goals

Her husband, Trevor, brings an air of relatability to the mix as he constantly is talking about his journey towards becoming a seasoned runner.

The podcast covers literally EVERYTHING — from running tactics, to interviews, and even race recaps.

Within a few episodes, you’ll feel like you’re being coached by two life-long friends.

My Favorite Episode: Motivation To Do The Hard Thing

    2) I’ll Have Another with Lindsay Hein

I equate Linsday Hein to that laid-back girlfriend that you could talk to for hours.

She’s amazingly light-hearted and ridiculously easy to listen to!

Her podcast is made up of a series of interviews with AMAZING women from all walks of life (businesswomen, pro athletes, etc).

Each conversation leaves you feeling empowered and inspired.

My Favorite Episode: Episode 99: Kathrine Switzer

    3) Another Mother Runner

Podcast host Sarah Bowen Shea makes the podcast seem natural and conversational — which can be super hard to find in a podcast!

I honestly forget I’m listening to an interview half the time.

Mostly, I just feel like I’m a fly on the wall, listening to a conversation between two close friends.

Sarah tackles real-life issues as it relates to running, and does so by incorporating interviews with some top contenders in the sport.

The podcast covers every topic you could think of, including issues that are a little more personal, including weight management, running motivation, and burnout.

While the advice is practical, it’s also hilariously presented and keeps me entertained run after run.

My Favorite Episode: Podcast #331: Mirinda Carfrae, 3X Ironman Triathalon World Champion (+ New Mom)

    4) Ali On The Run Show

I say this with ZERO chill — Ali will make you feel like you’re BFFs within one episode of listening to her.

I’m a little biased as I’ve been following her blog for some time, but I can’t overemphasize how great she is at making you feel like you’re a part of her running (or life) journey.

Her personable writing style definitely contributes towards her podcasting style as she effortlessly gets to the nitty-gritty of the conversations with influential guests.

My Favorite Episode: Episode 16: What We Were Clueless About As New Runners

    5) Man Bun Run

Not only is the title of this podcast pure gold, but the contents are worth listening to.

Rylee Mcdermott is an experienced runner and dad from Utah. I can definitely relate to his blunt honesty and dry sense of humor towards the sport.

The conversations with his guests are casual and relaxed, despite covering some heavy topics.

Guests range from the pros (Kara Goucher, Ryan Hall, etc.) to fellow running podcasters (Ali On The Run, Lindsay Hein, etc.)

My Favorite Episode: Episode 063 – Kara Goucher

    6) Running Rogue Podcast

This podcast is handy if you want an update of the current news in the running community.

It recaps recent events and offers relevant perspective on training and technique.

Their no-fuss attitude towards developing a running habit makes this podcast super useful if you’re looking for that kind of approach.

My Favorite Episode: Episode #51: Dealing With Failure

    7) No Meat Athlete

I’ve followed Matt Frazier and his blog for some time, and he’s a VERY dependable source of exceptional information when it comes to veganism and running.

Even if you’re not a vegan, his take on eating a plant-based diet as a runner is insightful and will provide you with top-notch value.

My Favorite Episode: Episode #211: The Guilt-Free Running Slump

    8) Trail Runner Nation

This is one that I’ve recently gotten into!

If you’re the least bit into trail running, or even the idea of beginning a trail running habit, this is the podcast for you.

In my personal opinion, trail running really gets to the heart of the sport, so I think learning about it is 100% worth your time.

My Favorite Episode: Chasing Volcanoes with Richard Kresser

    9) 300 Pounds & Running Podcast

If you don’t instantly fall in love with Martinus Evans you might have no soul.

Kidding…but he’s super charismatic, relatable, and some episodes had me smiling from ear to ear.

He also has a KILLER backstory, in which he went from weighing approximately 360-370 lbs to running a marathon.

If you’re craving a real, wholesome take on running and what it takes to see results, you need to listen to this podcast.

My Favorite Episode: What To Do If You Have To Poop On A Run

    10) Marathon Talk

Being the UK’s number one running podcast, you know this podcast has to be good.

It’s hosted by athletes Martin Yelling and Tom Williams where they routinely cover a wide variety of running topics that are super informative and well done.

The episodes can be a tad long, so I’d reserve them for a road trip you have planned in your future!

My Favorite Episode: Episode 70 – Ian Sharman

    11) Talk Ultra

I don’t know about you guys, but just HEARING stories about ultra running fascinates me.

I have yet to complete an ultra marathon (although I did run a marathon course that was technically 26.5 miles), so this motivates me to plan for more miles in the future!

This podcast will leave you awestruck after hearing stories from the ultramarathon pros.

My Favorite Episode: Episode 136 – Dragons Back Race

    12) Run Faster Podcast

The podcast is hosted by running coach Jay Johnson whose specialty is coaching adult runners to get PRs from distances between 1 to 100 miles.

He describes running tactics in a way that’s still fun and his love for the sport shows.

If you’re interested in upping your running speed, this is the guy that’s going to get you there.

My Favorite Episode:  Dimity McDowell – Another Mother Runner

    13) House of Run

Self-proclaimed “mediocre high school runners turned podcasters” Jason Halpin and Kevil Sully host this informative and funny podcast.

They cover the recent goings on in the running community is an enjoyable, easy-going, and non-pretentious way.

Their episodes are also a bit longer so I save these for long car rides as well!

My Favorite Episode: Episode 387: World Bests

    14) Running For Real Podcast

I absolutely LOVE Tina Muir, who is the host of this podcast, and I can’t say enough about her.

She’s a pro runner who has a 2:36 record in the marathon (whaat?!).

It’s the best of both worlds as she offers pro advice while still feeling like a friend who took you out to coffee.

She talks about real running topics that many of us struggle with such as missed PR’s, injuries, comparing yourself to other runners, and lack of motivation.

My Favorite Episode: Devon Yanko: You Can Reach Your Dream By Focusing On The Process

    15) Run To The Top Extra Kick

The podcast is comprised of a team of experts in the running community with different experiences and takes on the sport.

I love this podcast because there’s a new episode EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

The podcast episodes are also bite-sized so they range from 5-15 minutes.

Perfect if you want lots of value in a short amount of time!

My Favorite Episode: The Comparison Trap

    16) Rich Roll Podcast

Rich is the super-cool guy that does it all.

He’s a best-selling author, ultra-endurance athlete, father, public speaker, and plant-based nutrition advocate. It’s no wonder that his podcast provides so much value.

He has a way of getting his guests to open up in such a way that isn’t often seen in a podcast.

This makes it one of my all-time favorites to listen to.

My Favorite Episode: Knox Robinson On Why Running Is An Act Of Rebellion

    17) Ten Junk Miles

Listening to this podcast is just like listening to a conversation between friends who love the sport.

They occasionally get sidetracked, which often leads to hilarious commentary. This leaves you with entertaining conversation and entertainment for hours.

If you’re interested in laid-back flows of conversations definitely try this podcast out.

My Favorite Episode: Long Run 56 – Breanna Cornell

    18) The Negative Splits Podcast

An informative, no-frills podcast that has had notable past guests including Dean Karnazes and Bart Yasso.

A solid choice for a quick and easy running fix!

My Favorite Episode: No Coffee For You

    19) Endurance Planet

I’m a fan of this podcast because it covers aspects of EVERY endurance sport there is out there.

For someone like me who is sometimes interested in branching out and trying other forms of endurance, this is highly informative.

Creator Tawnee Prazak Gibson is an insanely well-rounded endurance athlete, along with the other coaches she adds to the team.

    Highly recommend.

My Favorite Episode: Joanna Zeiger: The Championship Mindset – How To Build Mental Toughness

    20) The Strength Running Podcast

Another very informative podcast with a lineup of impressive guests, including Shalane Flanagan, Matt Frazier, and Alexi Pappas.

The episodes also routinely cover strength training and injury prevention topics which I find super useful.

My Favorite Episode: Matt Frazier On Eating Healthy and The Habits That Support Hard Training

    21) Run Selfie Repeat

Last (but no way in hell least) is the Run Selfie Repeat podcast.

Kelly Roberts is an all-around bad-ass and you’d be crazy to not love her!

She’s the creator of the She Can & She Did blog which I highly recommend reading.

She’s 10/10 relatable on all fronts when it comes to running, getting healthy, and just life in general.

If you’re in need of a serious pep-talk (or laugh) be sure to keep this podcast at the ready.

My Favorite Episode: Drop Kick Your Fear Of Failure In The Face

    A Final Note!

Podcasts have 100% changed the way I view running and life in general.

I can’t emphasize enough how amazing it is that we have access to such useful (and free!) information at all times.

The best advice I could give you is to take advantage of it!

You can get an insane amount of value from ONE run if you listen to a single podcast episode. 🙂
